Cannes to announce list of films to go on screen in theaters

The Cannes Film Festival is to announce selection of films in early June.

Canceling the physical edition of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, the organizers will unveil a selection of films in early June to go on screen in several movie theaters.

“As of today, a physical edition seems complicated to organize, so we are going forward with an announcement of films from the (initial Official) selection at the beginning of June,” said a spokesperson for the festival.

The films will be given ‘Cannes 2020’ label.

The labeled films will go on screen at festivals such as Toronto, Deauville, Angoulême, San Sebastian, New York, Busan and Lumière festival in Lyon.

Cannes’ director Thierry Fremaux is a supporter of movie theaters.

He has previously promised to help exhibitors bring back moviegoers this fall.

He told Variety in April “The cinema and its industries are threatened. We will have to rebuild, affirm again its importance with energy, unity and solidarity.”

According to the Cannes organizers the selection process for the 2021 event will start in the fall and some of the movies that were supposed to be released at the 2020 edition will go on screen next year.

The 2020 edition of the Cannes festival was scheduled for May 12-23, but it was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
